NDP candidate Trent Derrick has a six point lead among decided voters in Cariboo-Prince George over Conservative candidate Todd Doherty, suggests a new poll released Tuesday by Leadnow.
Leadnow is an advocacy organization whose Vote Together campaign aims at identifying and supporting ridings by "uniting people in swing ridings where a few thousand votes will be all that's standing in the way of another Harper majority," according to their website.
According to the survey results, if the federal election were held tomorrow, 36 per cent of decided voters would back Derrick, with 30 per cent of respondents putting their vote behind Doherty.
Liberal candidate Tracy Calogheros was close behind with 29 per cent support while Green Richard Jaques was indicated to have five per cent of the vote.
Seven per cent of voters contacted were undecided but the poll doesn't appear to have factored in potential support for Christian Heritage candidate Adam De Kroon or independent candidate Sheldon Clare.
The landline phone survey was conducted on Oct. 9-11 by Environics Research. The riding is one of nine swing ridings identified by Leadnow as "an emerging battleground riding."
To gauge voter intention, survey participants were given the names of nominated local candidates and were also posed questions on whether they felt they were voting to re-elect or defeat the Conservative government, and those supporting opposition party candidates were asked about their willingness to switch their vote to the candidate with the best choice of defeating the Conservatives. The survey polled 500 people and has a margin of error of plus or minus 4.4 per cent, 19 times out of 20.
