COVID-19 officially closes all major mountain ski resorts near Prince George

Purden Ski Village the latest among others to end the 2019-20 season

Hopefully, you were able to clock in as much time on the slopes as you could this winter as local and regional slopes have officially been closed.

Ski resorts near Prince George and across northern B.C. were forced to end the 2019-20 season in order to create more social distancing and reduce the risk of spread as the COVID-19 pandemic continues.

As of yesterday (March 25), there are nine positive cases of coronavirus in Northern Health out of total of 659 in the province with more testing still to come for the region.

Purden Ski Village officially closed this morning (March 26) in a post on social media, asking everyone to stay safe and healthy during the outbreak.

The mountain, located more than 65 km east of Prince George, was set to host the third round of the 2020 TECK Open Finals and expecting hundreds of B.C.'s best skiers under 21 years old to further their careers.

The event was cancelled earlier this month as a result of the COVID-19 outbreak.

Powder King Mountain Resort closed its doors earlier this week in hopes of re-opening by today (March 26), but made the final decision yesterday (March 25) to end the season after consulting with authorities.

“Events that bring more than 50 people closely (less than 1-2m) together – indoors or outdoors – are ordered to be cancelled for now. This restriction does not apply to buildings where the environment allows for distance between people,” reads a guideline provided by Northern Health.

The Hart Ski Hill ended its season on Sunday (March 22) after 96 days of operation.

Other regional mountains that have been closed by COVID-19 include:

  • Hudson Bay in Smithers
  • Murray Ridge in Fort St. James
  • Troll Ski Resort in Quesnel
  • Mt. Timothy in Lac La Hache
