A celebration of life will be held Friday for one of the city's most-noted volunteers.

Nancy Loreth had been a driving force behind the Prince George Exhibition - now known as the B.C. Northern Exhibition - for decades.

She became the PGX Association president in 1999, after serving as a director for 15 years. That same year she won both a national and provincial award for outstanding volunteer service.

Achievements during her time as president include seeing the fair being judged the best in B.C. for those with attendance over 20,000. That accolade was achieved in 2008.

For Loreth, the fair was a celebration of agriculture.

"In the late 1970s the fair was totally different," Loreth told Citizen reporter Bernice Trick in 2006. By that point, she had been involved with the fair for 28 years.

"Back then everything was held here at the fair, but in today's world, cattlemen have their own breed shows across Canada.

"Today the 4H , which is a huge part of our fair, is upholding the agricultural portion."

As the city becomes more urbanized, Loreth said it offers rare opportunities for kids "to see a sheep up close or ride behind a tractor."

Loreth died May 20 at age 72 following a battle with cancer. She is survived by husband Bob, daughter Betty, sons Rick and Mark and six grandchildren.

The celebration of life will be held Bon Voyage banquet room, starting at 2 p.m.
