A three-day record has been broken for COVID-19 in B.C. and it's causing more concern for the provincial health officer.

Dr. Bonnie Henry reported 46 more virus-linked deaths in the province since Friday (Nov. 27), the most ever reported from a weekend, increasing the toll to 441.

"We are facing a significant storm surge," Henry said, noting that 80 per cent of those deaths were among the elderly in long-term care, while eight were people that were hospitalized.

"This is why right now we need to come together again. We know there is vaccine on the horizon, and that is our goal. That is what will help us get through the next phase."

There were 2,364 new infections detected, Dr. Henry said, for a grand total of 33,238 since January, including 73 new ones in Northern Health for a regional total of 845.

The latest three-day case counts are as follows:

  • 750 = Friday to Saturday
  • 731 = Saturday to Sunday
  • 596 = Sunday to Monday

Due to an earlier data error in counting cases in Fraser Health, 277 historical cases also contributed to today's count as well.

Among the 8,855 active COVID-19 cases in B.C., 316 people are in hospital, including 75 in critical care.

Despite the surge in hospitalizations, Health Minister Adrian Dix said B.C. hospitals are still only at about 70 per cent capacity, and ICU units at 52 per cent, for COVID-19 patients.

There are 10,139 people being actively monitored after coming into contact with someone who previously tested positive for the virus, while 23,111 have recovered.
