B.C. records 564 new COVID-19 cases, 46 more variant infections detected

Concerns are rising rapidly in B.C. as COVID-19 cases are once again beginning to surge.

In a live briefing this afternoon (March 4), Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry and Health Minister Adrian Dix said 564 cases of the virus were detected during the past 24 hours, bringing the grand total to 82,473. 

Of the new cases, Northern Health added 46, bringing the authority total to 4,739 since the virus hit the region on March 14, 2020.

Officials announced four more deaths linked to the virus today, bringing the province's toll to 1,376.

A total of 76,289 cases that are officially classified as fully recovered

There are 4,743 active cases throughout B.C. with 248 people currently hospitalized, 63 of which are in ICU or critical care.

Dr. Henry also revealed 46 new variants-of-concern cases, bringing the provincial total to 246, 16 of which are active. 

Of the recorded total, 218 involve the U.K. variant (B.1.1.7) while 28 are of the South African variant (B.1.351). None of the variants of concern have been detected in Northern Health.

Despite having the highest COVID-19 positivity rate in the province, Prince George continues to see encouraging drops in caseloads. 

According to the latest Geographic Distribution of COVID-19 by Local Health Area of Case Residence data from the BC Centre for Disease Control (BCCDC), from Feb. 21 to 27, 2021, Prince George recorded just 30 cases, the second-lowest in the region. 

Peace River South saw the highest tally with 33, while Peace River North found 22.

Both Burns Lake and Quesnel had two total cases while the Nechako region tallied three.

Northern Health's school-exposure section also explains the following:

  • Contact tracing is initiated to determine how the individual was infected and who they were in close contact with
  • We identify and notify close contacts who may be at an increased risk, and advise them to self-isolate and monitor for symptoms for 14 days
  • Only Public Health can determine who is a close contact
    • Learning groups, friends or other connections may not be determined to be a close contact
  • Public Health staff works closely with the school and school district throughout the case and contact management process to maintain close communication with the school community
