Turns out, there will be some action on the ball diamond in Prince George this summer.

The Spruce City Men’s Fastball League (SCMFL) is kicking off its 2020 season tonight (July 14) after the city gave organizers the all-clear to take the field under a reduced schedule.

According to a league spokesperson, four teams will each play 20 games with the goal of ending the shortened campaign by late August.

The competing clubs are as follows (in alphabetical order):

  • Custom Edge Sports
  • Falcon Contracting
  • Prince George Hitmen
  • Sibola Electric Royals

All games will be played at Spruce City Stadium in Carrie Jane Grey Memorial Park.

Barring poor weather conditions, evenings are set to consist of double-headers starting at 6:30 p.m. every Tuesday and Wednesday, and Thursdays starting next week.

Players in the SCMFL include those that suit up with the Big Guy Lake Kings, who successfully brought home the COVID Cup from Kelowna earlier this month.

The black and orange went 5-1 in the tournament, garnering a 6-0 shutout victory in the final.

In May, Tourism Prince George also announced the postponement of the Canadian Native Fastball Championships due to the pandemic.

The city was initially scheduled to host the tournament consisting of more than 80 teams over the B.C. Day long weekend, July 31 to Aug. 3.

In June, the committee behind the Spruce City Minor Boys Fastball League decided to cancel the 2020 year entirely out of respect for player, family and volunteer safety.

Across the street at Citizen Field, as of this publication, it’s still unclear if the Prince George Senior Men’s Baseball League will host a season.
