The Association Advocating for Women and Children is seeking donations to help bring some Christmas cheer to the women who are forced to used its downtown shelter over the holiday season.

By the time the big day rolls around, AWAC is hoping to have enough items in place to fill at least 60 bags with a trove of items to help its clients make it through the winter.

They include clothing such as mitts, gloves, toques, scarves, socks and underwear. Two-piece flannel pajamas in various sizes - there is more of a need for large and extra large - are also welcome, as are backpacks and purses.

Donations of hygiene products, such as shampoos, conditioner, body wash, toothpaste, toothbrushes and deodorant, as well as hair accessories - hair ties, barettes, hair bands - and brushes and combs are also being accepted.

And yes, chocolates and candy canes are a nice touch.

AWAC is also asking that the items be newly-purchased rather than second hand due to hygiene issues, although newly-made homemade knitted items are fine.

Donations can be dropped off at the social agency's shelter at 144 George St. downtown. For more information, call AWAC executive director Diane Nakamura at 250-613-9610 or e-mail her at [email protected].
