The buildup of area snowpack has been below normal so far this winter, the River Forecast Centre said in its January update.

The levels in Upper Fraser West and Upper Fraser East were at 77 per cent and it stood at 79 per cent in the Nechako basin.

By early January, nearly half the annual snowpack in B.C. has typically accumulated and the levels provide an early sign of whether there will be flooding this spring.

"At this early stage in the season, there is limited indication that any regions of the province are developing increased seasonal flood risk," the RFC said in the update.

But the RFC added that "with three or more months left of snow accumulation, these outlooks could change significantly."

Last May, the centre issued a high stream flow advisory for the Nechako River at Isle Pierre down to the confluence with the Fraser River when the snowpack in the Nechako basin stood at 122 per cent of normal.

The most recent observations were made Jan. 1.
