$90,000 for Heart for Haiti

Northern B.C. residents are truly wearing their hearts on their sleeves for the victims of the Haiti earthquake.

Northern B.C. residents are truly wearing their hearts on their sleeves for the victims of the Haiti earthquake.

The Have a Heart for Haiti ShelterBox campaign by the Nechako, Yellowhead and Prince George Rotary clubs is proving to be highly successful with $90,000 contributed in northern B.C. which included $17,000 from Prince George.

The shelter boxes, which cost $1,000 each, contain a 10-person tent, blankets, sleeping bags and groundsheets, water filtration system, multifuel stove, pots, tools, rope and other survival items as well as children's school supplies.

Andrea Johnson, Nechako Rotary club member, said every family receiving a shelter box is trained on how to properly use the items like the water filter system and multifuel stove.

Donations are coming in from 100 Mile House to Prince Rupert and groups and school are getting involved.

Nukko Lake elementary school students, who contributed $500 to the campaign on Friday, had an opportunity to check out one of the big tents and the items inside at a display at Pine Centre Mall.
