Emily Carr University of Art + Design has an art show in Prince George this weekend. The exhibition of student art happens Dec. 5 and 6 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day. All ECU student artists will be in attendance to discuss their work (public feedback is encouraged), their education, and the new P.G. campus.
"It is all art produced by Emily Carr alumni, and people can come enjoy it, buy it, talk about it, get a sense of what our students can do," said ECU spokeswoman Lisa Middleton.
The event is at the Wood Innovation & Design Centre at 499 George Street across from the Ramada.
The Community Arts Council is selling raffle tickets for a grand prize of a year of arts events and cultural activities in the local area. The winner will receive a staycation at The Ramada Hotel, a Cougars game in the City of Prince George suite, plus tickets and passes to all the favourite shows and facilities that our arts community has to offer. Tickets are $10 each available at Studio 2880. Draw date is Dec. 28, making this a perfect stocking stuffer.
Miracle of South Division Street has been held over. The independent professional play directed by Ted Price and performed at ArtSpace - all proceeds to the children's aid programs of 27 Million Voices and Salvation Army - has been so popular it will continue running until Dec. 13. It is a play filled with heartwarming plot twists, laughter and thought-provoking ideas all baked in a Christmas treat. Get tickets at Books & Company. Theatre North West's play A Christmas Carol is on until Dec. 11. The all-professional theatre show was so popular it was held over for extra performances.
This version of the Dickens classic was adapted and directed by Heather Davies. It also has some hints of the popular steampunk visual theme that fits perfectly with the Victorian England setting, where Scrooge tells of his transformation from grouchy miser into grateful philanthropist, but only after three visits by Christmas spirits that changed his heart. Local country-rock band Bralorne is playing Dec. 5 at Pan Eatery (formerly known as the College Heights Pub) starting with an acoustic set at 7 p.m. then a plugged in jam at 9 p.m.
Bralorne is also set to play in Terrace at the Northern Motor Inn on Dec. 18 and 19, then back in Prince George to headline the New Year's Eve party at the Ness Lake Community Hall.
Cantata Singers, with special guests Bel Canto Youth Choir, will sing live for a holiday concert event entitled Reflection Of Christmas on Dec. 5 at 7:30 p.m. at St. Michael's Church downtown. Tickets are $15.
Standup comedian Chris Gordon is coming to Prince George for a two-night stand. He will take the mic on Dec. 10 and 11 (8:30 p.m. each night) at Nancy O's. Tickets are $20 each to see live this comic who was featured on NBC's Last Comic Standing, CBC's Laugh With Alberta's Best, and Just for Laughs Homegrown.
Popular singer-songwriter Raghu Lokanathan, along with Sean Wesley Wood and Samantha Scott, will be live on-stage at the P.G. Legion no Dec. 11 starting at 8 p.m. They are calling the event "a full night of Prince George-based artistry." Tickets are $10.
Girls' Night: The Musical is waving its feather boa right into Vanier Hall. On Jan. 5 see this girl power production that took first the U.K. then the U.S. and now Canada by pink hurricane force. Five life-long girlfriends get together for a karaoke night all their own, and their stories tumble out in between the musical numbers like Man I Feel Like A Woman, It's Raining Men, Girls Just Wanna Have Fun and other femme favourites. Tickets are on sale via Ticketmaster.
On Feb. 5, CN Centre hosts the return of Canadian country music star Johnny Reid. Joining him are opening acts Aaron Goodvin, JJ Shiplett, and special VIP guest Natalie MacMaster, Canada's Cape Breton fiddling superstar.

A two-punch event from the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame comes to CN Centre on March 10. Mega-rockers Joan Jett & The Blackhearts and Heart will share the stage on their Queens Of Sheba Tour. Tickets are on sale now at Studio 2880 and CN Centre Box Office, or online via the Ticketmaster website.
Acclaimed local potter Leanna Carlson, who obtains her own local clay as well as shapes the material, is offering afternoon pottery classes for kids. Those interested can learn more at www.carlsonpottery.com.
Two Rivers Gallery (2RG) offers an array of hands-on art classes for all ages, this fall. After school spots are available for kids as young as two, and there is no maximum age for the creative instruction that happens in the studio spaces and MakerLab rooms at the downtown facility. Kids are welcome to story time at Books & Company at 10 a.m. This free story performance gets the young creative minds flowing, and develops an early appreciation for books and other cultural benefits.
Artists and arts groups looking for a base of operations can now join the cluster of creators at Studio 2880. The city's arts headquarters has done some internal adjusting and two spaces are now available for new rental opportunities.
