UNBC women taking on Manitoba in CIS soccer action at North Cariboo Field

With two swift kicks, Tofa Fakunle doubled his team’s total goalscoring output this season in the CIS Canada West Conference.

Fakunle scored back-to-back goals in the first half and Francesco Bartolilo followed up  when he put in the rebound off a penalty kick in the second half to power the UNBC Timberwolves soccer team to a 3-2 win over the Thompson Rivers University WolfPack Saturday in Kamloops.

Fakunle scored his first of the season after Bartolilo fed him a short pass 12:46 into the game and his second goal, 32:35 in, came on a penalty shot. Ryan Glanville made it close with two goals for the WolfPack in the dying minutes, scoring at 74:06 and 89:40.

Mitch McFarlane made six saves in the UNBC nets, while TRU goalie Clave Harsany faced four shots, three of which found the net.

It was the first win of the season for UNBC after four losses. TRU’s record also stands at 1-4.

UNBC and TRU will meet again at Hillside Stadium in Kamloops, Sunday at 1 p.m.

The UNBC women play Sunday at noon in Prince George at North Cariboo Field against Manitoba.

The Timberwolves are still looking for their first victory after losing their season-opener 4-0 Friday night at home against the Winnipeg Wesmen. Maeghan Lindsay scored two goals for Winnipeg, while Jamila Calvez and Hannah Lindgren also scored on UNBC goalie Tianna Toopitsin, who faced six shots in the game. Wesmen goalie Taylor Thorkelsson made three saves for the shutout.

Manitoba started the season Friday in Edmonton with a 1-0 loss to the University of Alberta Pandas.
