LANGLEY – Propelled by two first half goals, the Trinity Western Spartans men’s soccer team earned a 2-0 home victory over the UNBC Timberwolves Saturday at Chase Office Field.
Noah Kroeker (Calgary) and Gordon Grice (Burnaby) both scored for the Spartans (7-4-1), while Sebastian Colyn (Langley) made six saves to earn his Canada West-leading sixth clean sheet.
The Spartans improve to 6-1-1 over their last eight games and now sit third in the Pacific Division. The Timberwolves' record falls to 4-6-3.
Timberwolves goalkeeper Rob Goodey made 10 saves in the losing effort.
Kroeker got the Spartans on the board first in the 34th minute, after his shot just outside the Timberwolves box beat Goodey to the far left post to make it 1-0.
The Spartans then pushed their lead to 2-0 in the 45th minute, when Grice caught Goodey challenging out of the box, firing home a goal into the empty net from 25 yards out.
There was no looking back for TWU, as they continued their strong play into the second half to hold on for the victory.
TWU finished the night with an 20-11 edge in shots and 12-6 edge in shots on goal.
Friday night in Langley the T-wolves and Spartans tied 1-1. UNBC is down to its last two games of the regular season. The T-wolves are on a bye weekend this week. They host the Thompson Rivers University WolfPack Oct. 19-20 at Masich Place Stadium.
