Summer Games athletes reach medal podium

Prince George Track and Field Club members gave Cariboo-Northeast Zone 8 three medals at the B.C. Summer Games in Nanaimo. On Saturday, Kendel Rogers of Prince George won silver in the girls pole vault, clearing the bar at 2.4 metres.

On Saturday, Kendel Rogers of Prince George won silver in the girls pole vault, clearing the bar at 2.4 metres. Shelby Jansen of Prince George made the podium twice on the opening day of the Games Friday, winning silver in the girls 300m race in a time of 42.25 seconds. Jansen also teamed up with Lindsay King of Prince George and Quesnel runners Olivia Baptiste and Avery Quiring to claim bronze in the 4X400m relay, stopping the clock in 4:21.15.

In swimming, Skylar Lewington of Prince George won a bronze medal in the girls 400m individual medley. Lewington, a member of the Prince George Barracudas Swim Club, finished Saturday's final in 5:24.86. Alexandra Winkel of Prince George was fifth in the girls 200m butterfly in 2:37.14.

In boys softball, Zone 8 lost its opener 7-6 to North West, but rebounded for a 10-6 win over Thompson-Okanagan.

In box lacrosse, the Zone 8 team coached by Don Wittmeier of Prince George dropped to 0-2 Saturday after a 15-5 loss to Vancouver Island, which followed a 14-2 loss to Fraser River Delta on Friday.

In boys softball, Zone 8 lost its opener Friday 7-6 to North West, then defeated Thompson-Okanagan 10-6. The team is coached by David Wilson of Prince George.

The Zone 8 soccer teams lost their opening games Friday. The boys, coached by Steve Hood of Prince George, suffered a 9-0 defeat to Fraser Valley, while the girls, coached by Sam Dosanjh of Quesnel, lost 7-1 to Fraser River-Delta.

In girls volleyball, Cariboo-Northeast had a 1-2 record after three matches. The girls lost in two straight sets to Vancouver-Squamish and Vancouver Island-Central Coast, then beat North West 2-0. Sarah Loedel of Prince George is head coach of Zone 8. The Zone 8 boys coached by Linden Smith of Prince George had a 2-2 record. They defeated Vancouver-Squamish 2-1 and the Kootenays 2-1 and lost to Fraser Valley 2-0 and Fraser River-Delta 2-0.

In beach volleyball, Zone 8 finished second in Pool a with a 2-1 record after wins over Fraser River-Delta, 2-0, and Thompson-Okanagan, 2-1, and a 2-1 match loss to Vancouver-Squamish. In Pool B, Zone 8 went 1-2, losing in straight sets to Fraser Valley and Vancouver Island and beating North West 2-0. The team is coached by Amy Hogan of Prince George.

The Games continue today and Sunday.
