The Prince George Free Press published its last issue on Friday.

I was a reporter at the Free Press from May 2005 to February 2011, and worked with many of the reporters, editors and other staff who lost their jobs last week.

Even though I've worked with The Citizen for more than four years, and the Free Press was our competitor, there is no joy in seeing hardworking journalists out of work.

In addition, Tuesday marked the Day of Mourning for workers killed on the job.

While there is no comparing what happened at the Free Press to the tragedy of someone dying at work, the death of a newspaper still has an effect on the community it served.

When I heard the news Friday, the first thing that came to mind was the cook's line from Gordon Lightfoot's classic folk ballad The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald: "Fellas, it's been good to know ya."
