Something old, something new, something borrowed, something read

It cost more to be a library member 100 years ago than it does now. It cost $1 then, it's free now. How many services can make this claim? The Prince George Public Library celebrates its centennial this fall.

The Prince George Public Library celebrates its centennial this fall.

The first library reading room was in the First Presbyterian Church in 1911. It cost $1 to purchase a copy of the key to the room that housed 75 books.

The building the library occupies now is 30 years old and constant improvements are being made.

The Prince George Library has been designated the 2015 Games Information Centre.

"We have the central spot downtown and we'll be ready to welcome visitors, athletes and their families," said Neil Godbout, communications co-ordinator.

The board has made a commitment to begin fundraising for a Knowledge Garden, making use of the space between the library and the Civic Centre for a park.

The board will commit $25,000 for each of three years towards the park making it a four-season destination point, as well as being utilized during the Canada Winter Games in 2015.

"We're looking forward to having some of our children's activities in the Knowledge Garden as well as the perfect spot for photo opportunities for high school graduations," said Godbout. "It would be nice to have an attractive space to offer programs for children and adults alike."

The library offers a historical downtown walking tour that takes place weekday afternoons. The tour guide points out historical sites on a set route and it takes about an hour and a half to complete.

It's good for locals and tourists to both get informed on the details of what the town was like in days gone by, added Godbout.
