Gairns makes cut for World Cup race in Russia

Now that qualifying is out of the way and she's made it through in the top-16 at the Audi FIS Ski Cross World Cup, Tiana Gairns can focus on making a push for the medal podium. Or maybe even a Golden Crown.

Tiana Gairns of Prince George finished ninth as the top Canadian Sunday's Audi FIS Ski Cross World Cup final race in Veysonnaz, Switzerland. The 22-year-old placed 12th in the season standings.
Now that qualifying is out of the way and she's made it through in the top-16 at the Audi FIS Ski Cross World Cup, Tiana Gairns can focus on making a push for the medal podium. 
Or maybe even a Golden Crown.
The 22-year-old from Prince George is among four Canadian women in the mix for Saturday's race in Sunny Valley, Russia, after she posted the ninth-quickest qualifying run Friday.
Gairns finished just behind national teammates Hannah Schmidt of Ottawa, who was seventh, and Marielle Thompson of Whistler, who was eighth. 
Courtney Hoffos of Windermere was the quickest Canadian in qualifying, finishing fourth. Zoe Chore of Cranbrook just missed the cut, placing 17th.
World champion Sandra Naeslund of Sweden set the pace, followed by Fanny Smith of Switzerland and Marielle Bergen Sabbatel of France. Smith, who has already wrapped up the Crystal Globe as the season points champion, is vying for her fourth Golden Crown, presented annually to the winner of the race in Russia, contested on the slopes of the South Ural mountains at Chelyabinsk.
Nineteen women entered the qualifying races.
Two Canadian men made the top-32 for the race on Saturday. Reece Howden, the World Cup season champ from Cultus Lake, was eighth in Friday's qualifying run, while Chris del Bosco of Montreal placed 10th.
Jared Schmidt of Ottawa ended up one spot shy of qualifying for the race, finishing 33rd, while Carson Cook of  Edmonton was 36th.
Terrance Tchiknavorian of France. Bastiern Midol of France and Florian Wilmsmann of Germany finished 1-2-3 in respective order atop the list of 41 who entered the men's qualifier.
