Sarah Beaudry and Emma Lunder are going to need plenty of rest tonight.

They both have a biathlon pursuit race to complete Saturday in Hochfilzen, Austria.

Beaudry, a 26-year-old Caledonia Nordic Ski Club member from Prince George, guaranteed her spot in the pursuit after she finished 42nd out of 106 racers in Friday’s BMW IBU World Cup women’s sprint.

Lunder, a 29-year-old from Vernon, placed 11th.

Only the top 60 sprint finishers qualify for the 10 km pursuit and Beaudry did that with a near-perfect 9-for-10 shooting performance and a finishing time that was 1:42.4 behind that of Norwegian Tiril Eckhoff, who completed the 7.5-kilometre course in 19 minutes 38 seconds.

“Not quite enough zoom to get into the points (only the top 40 do) but enough to get a second chance tomorrow,” wrote Beaudry, on her Instagram page.

Lunder shot clean on the range and was just 48.3 seconds behind Eckhoff.

Norway swept the medal podium with Ingrid Landmark Tandrevold (0+0, +7.6) and Marte Olsbu Roeisland (1+0, +24.6) right on Eckhoff’s heels.

In other Canadian results, Nadia Moser of Whitehorse, Yukon finished 64th (0+1, +2:13.5) and Darya Sepandj of Calgary (2+1, +3:55.1) ended up 100th in her second career World Cup race.

The men will be on the pursuit course first on Saturday, with a 12.5 km course set out for them. Canadians Christian Gow of Canmore, Alta., and Adam Runnalls of Calgary both qualified, based on their Thursday sprint results. Gow placed 37th, 1:56.4 behind sprint winner Sturla Holm Laegreid of Norway, while Runnalls finished 57th and will start the pursuit 2:25.3 after Laegreid leaves the start gate.

The top four finishers in the men’s sprint were from Norway. Johannes Dale and Johannes Thingnes Boe won silver and bronze respectively, while Vetle Sjaastad Christiansen was fourth.

Mass start races are scheduled for Sunday, the final events of the World Cup tour before the Christmas break.
