While networking events are crucial for breaking down silos in the social service sector, five key elements should have been clearly defined before council approved the $2,500 expense: clear goals, inclusive participation, follow-up planning, transparent budgeting, and justified staff involvement. Without these, even well-intentioned efforts risk appearing symbolic—and may be seen as a misuse of taxpayers’ money.

They’re chasing the populist vote. Until we have grown-ups in the room and a cross-party consensus that tax cuts don’t reduce deficits, the relentless march toward unsustainable debt will continue. Yes, spending cuts and economic growth help, but they’re not enough on their own—eventually, taxes will have to rise. The longer leaders delay, the steeper the climb becomes. This isn’t ideology; it’s basic fiscal math. Politicians’ short-term thinking is driving us deeper into the red - but maybe that just reflects what the public wants to hear. Are we, the electorate, ultimately the catalyst for this shortsightedness?

Prince George needs addiction recovery services, but has the Council compromised the secular governance principles that underpin our province? While residents at Set Free Recovery do not need to be religious, they are expected to attend weekly church services and Bible study as part of the program’s structure.
Faith-based organizations have the right to structure their programs around their beliefs. However, when those beliefs extend into the public sphere, as in this case, democratically elected Councils tasked with upholding secular governance should not approve temporary zoning permits for organizations that embed religious activities into their recovery model, potentially limiting accessibility. Religious-based recovery should offer choice, not obligation.

Gordon is right—we should shift our habits to buy more local and support Canadian industries. However, a lot of the media focuses on the economic fallout of the tariffs, downplaying the main three reasons:
1: Tariff Parity – It creates fair trade. Currently the US does pay more in export tariffs than they charge.
2: Protectionism – Reducing reliance on imports strengthens; national security, domestic industries and creates jobs. Flip side is probably higher domestic prices.
3: Negotiation Tool – Tariffs pressure better trade deals, industrial policies, and geopolitical outcomes. Though aggressive, they push negotiations.
Trump’s methods are controversial, but his goals are clear: level the playing field, rebuild domestic industries, and secure better trade agreements.
Canada is resource-rich, yet we fail to maximize our potential. Instead of grandstanding, we should focus on self-sufficiency, industrial development, and smart policy.

Shouldn't libraries prioritize their core mission of promoting education, literacy, and access to knowledge, rather than taking on responsibilities typically managed by social services? Redirecting funding to specialized institutions could lead to more targeted and sustainable outcomes. Additionally, this editorial would benefit from more context, such as highlighting the library’s $4.6 million budget and the fact that approximately 75% of it is allocated to staff costs. Providing this information would help the public assess whether their tax dollars are being spent effectively.

This is an editorial piece, and the editor has a responsibility to conduct thorough research and provide a definitive stance. Councillor Kyle Sampson’s interjection either constitutes a conflict of interest or it does not. If a conflict exists, there would be grounds to nullify the amendment. If no conflict exists, the editor should refrain from engaging in unnecessary speculation. It is unprofessional for the editor to raise such an issue and then avoid taking a clear position on it.

It’s hard not to conclude that this new model will drive even more patients to the already overburdened ER during the 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. window. Wouldn’t a hybrid system, offering both pre-scheduled appointments and walk-ins throughout the day, have been a more practical and patient-friendly solution?

While the right to strike is a cornerstone of labor relations, the Canada Post strike underscores the challenges of balancing workers’ rights with the continuity of essential public services that operate under a monopoly granted by the Canada Post Corporation Act. Whilst the act was designed to ensure universal access, it leaves the public vulnerable to disruptions. This situation raises important questions about whether alternative systems or reforms could mitigate the pitfalls posed by monopolized services. Living in BC we are all aware of monopolistic practices…….ICBC, BC Hydro, BC liquor.

One problem with closed council meetings is it results in a lack of clarity. The actual value of the gravel in question is unclear - was it worth a few thousand dollars or much more? If it was of significant value, the persistence of the two councillors in investigating this matter could be seen as more reasonable. Currently, there is uncertainty about the gravel's final destination. The police have only speculated that it might have ended up on city-owned property. Additionally, the councillors were acting on advice from City's counsel. Given the incomplete information, it's unfair to judge the two councillors too harshly. What's really required is a council that operates transparently!

Council, or those advising them, may share responsibility. Installing riprap upstream on one bank inevitably alters flow and deflects energy toward the opposite, unprotected side. By protecting the winery bank and leaving the trail bank exposed, they likely accelerated erosion—an avoidable lapse in basic planning.
