Snow control pilot project gets the go-ahead

Snow control pilot project gets the go-ahead

We are truly spoiled with snow removal as this is the only major city in BC that gets significant snowfall with an average of 12 feet of snow per year. We get our residential sidewalks cleared for us by the city while every other city gets home owners to clear their sidewalks and face significant fines for not doing so. We get our streets cleared in relatively good times for the most part and the city does a good job of it. I see no problems with scaling back on statutory holidays per se.

One of my biggest issues with the city is the lack of prompt snow clearing on industrial roads like Northwood pulp and PG Pulpmill roads as these are 24/7 heavy usage roads and on weekends or holidays we would be lucky to see a plow before 8am usually and we would be even luckier to have usable roads due to the heavy truck traffic these roads get after heavy snowfalls.

Really another forum to discuss a problem that is already well known and documented? How about concrete action instead of holding another wasteful meeting to discuss something that apparently city council is completely in the dark about.

How about getting some courage and actually deal with the cause which is the homeless, the addicts and the street walkers. They are responsible for a good portion of crimes committed and the reason why people are scared to be in the bowl at night.

Better yet strike up another committee, forum or public town hall to discuss what I just posted to see if it’s real or not.

So far the city has a poor track record in this going back 15 plus years and still haven’t done much except nod your heads and say let’s have another forum/meeting.

Prince George International Airport brings in new CEO

I truly believe the PG Airport can grow but it takes time and patience. Many nay sayers have been very vocal about the runway extension and tank farm and things were looking good and there was interest from several airlines but then COVID hit and things changed overnight.

However things are starting to look somewhat brighter as mining, manufacturing and even forestry is looking up and several warehouses, repair shops and even heavy equipment sales are picking up. This will invariably lead to more flights, more cargo and heavy lift capacity flights coming to the city but it takes time.

Until then the nay sayers will only see the negative side of things which is their choice.

Latter who you are in this city everybody has an opinion on moccasin flats both for and against. My opinion is moccasin flats needs to be permanently shut down. Ever since it became a camp both minor and serious crimes went up considerably. Businesses lost customers and home owners did not feel safe in their own neighbourhood.

Lots of fingers have been pointed but serious action was slow in coming and help was virtually non existent. A very high number of homeless are represented by the natives many of whom were kicked off the reserve and ironically enough once they were off the reserve the Band felt that they were no longer responsible for that person and now they became a white eye problem which has perpetually continued a cycle that nobody can or wants to break.

Those who live far enough away from the problem like in the Hart, College Heights and other areas generally don’t understand what the big issue is until it directly affects them and then they start the cycle all over.

Economically the City is once again primed to be central to any energy or commercial traffic east and west with that being said it requires the input of the feds and the provincial government both of which are excellent of ignoring the North until they can’t anymore.

With Prince Rupert expanding their cargo facilities again and increased shipping coming from Asia it only puts PG in a better position in the long term. It remains to be seen what the province and feds are willing to do.

It is important that any public office keep everything transparent and above board so having members of the public and media there keeps the process fair. This is especially true when discussing anything around money whether it be collecting, spending or increasing/decreasing fees and so on because we have the legal right to know how public officials are spending or collecting these monies. If you feel uncomfortable with having media there then it sends a message that you don’t want things known.

Provincial pilot project bringing more AEDs to Prince George

As the story states AEDs are user friendly with clearly defined pictures and a voice that tells you what to do. Even if you have zero medical training you would be able to use the system it’s that easy and was designed with that in mind as you will rarely have medically trained professionals nearby when an event happens.

These are proven lifesavers and while expensive to buy they are relatively easy to maintain and take up very little space. I believe most first aid training facilities also give training on the use of AEDs and CPR.

I’m a frequent visitor to the hospital and clinics due to suffering a heart attack 11 yrs ago for regular checkups I see the bloated red tape and the amount of administration doing nothing but taking up space and trying to justify their job. I was told for every doctor in northern health there are 4 administrative staff to me that’s unacceptable. Northern health and the province need to start paring down staff and increasing nurses and doctors.

My suggestion for the surplus is put 28 million away, 3 million into paying down the debt, 5 million into sewer and water and split the last 4 million into whatever needed like new equipment, building upgrades and so on.

But then again I'm a taxpayer and its not like i have a say in that either on what the city does with the surplus.

While the way the police were involved was done wrong I do support that they were there. People want to believe meetings are safe and organized but I know from personal experience when emotions get involved common sense goes out the window and tempers flare. Don’t believe me there is ample evidence available on YouTube, social media and news clippings from not only within BC but right across Canada and the world. Green space is a hot button topic in PG. and I’ve seen people on either side of the line lose their temper in public.

I personally have no issue with the police being in attendance either in plain clothes or uniform and I’d feel safer with them around.
