Puzzlement over prizes

After watching the Canada Games figure skating medal ceremonies, I was taken back as to why some podium skaters were given stuffed toys and not medals.

It takes two entries to make an event, so you have your Gold and silver medalists. Events with less than 4 entries, but have 3 entries competing, a gold and silver medal is awarded not the Bronze. An event with 2 entries, only the Gold was presented and stuffed toys were given instead of medals.

To watch this unfold to young competitors that earned a silver medal in a group of 2, and earned bronze medal in a group of 3, not get medals was disheartening to say the least.

I think the rules need to be changed. Looked to me like this rule was not clear to entrants, medal bearers and audience, as they looked as bewildered as I did.

If someone can clear this up, I would love to hear it. To me this did not show sportsmanship or respect to competitors.
