Prince George turns 100 years old?
Wow, what happened? The election for mayor and council was held on May 15, 1915, not March 8 and not March 6. The government granted incorporation to Fort George on March 6th, 1915 so what in hell are we doing celebrating 100 years in March? We could have started the festivities in January or February if they were going by the year only.
I suppose we could split hairs here by saying all things started on March 6th but when the government granted incorporation it was not to Prince George. On that date there was no Prince George - it was still Fort George.
On May 15, 1915, elections were held and Mayor Gillett and his council were elected. They also floated a plebiscite which asked the people of Fort George for an official name for the city. They had two choices City of Fort George or City of Prince George. Out of 1,000 people, about 13 people voted to keep the name of Fort George, the rest voted for Prince George.
I suppose I should apologize to the committee that did their study but if they were looking for a proper date it should have been May 15, 1915.
