1929 - August 14, 2024

Irene (née Nagy) passed away at the Prince George Hospice House on August 14, 2024, surrounded by the love of her family.

Born 3 months premature while her parents were visiting Montreal, Irene was a fighter from the start. Despite many challenges, she lived to the incredible age of 95 - becoming the most long-lived person in her entire family.

Irene grew up in Hungary, and returned to Montreal in 1948 with her mother, brother and just one steamer trunk of belongings. Irene met her future husband, George, at the train station in Prague prior to embarking to Canada on the Queen Mary.

She was reacquainted with George in 1950 while working in Montreal, and a romance was sparked. Irene moved to Prince George in 1955 to marry George. For this "big city girl", PG (with its wooden sidewalks at that time) was quite an adjustment!

Always a hardworking business woman, Irene spent many years working alongside George in his accounting practice. She later became owner/manager of Fichtner Footwear Ltd., which she operated for 22 years (1978-2000).

After retiring, Irene enjoyed going to Curves and Tai Chi, her biweekly hair appointments, doing Sudoku and working on her many hobbies and crafts. She enjoyed cooking delicious (and labor intensive) Hungarian meals, and had a special touch creating spectacular table settings.

Irene will always be remembered for her love of shoes, jewellery, foxes and the TV show Jeopardy, as well as by the many beautiful floral arrangements, wreaths, ornaments and jewellery she made for family and friends.

Irene is survived by her daughters Sylvia (Terry), Ilona and Desirée; her grandchildren Cara & Kate, Hannah, Michael & Luke, Noah, Jackson & Jorja; and her great-granddaughters Nova and Willow.

Irene was predeceased by her parents, her husband George in 1992, and her brother Ted in 2020.

At Irene's request, no service will be held. If desired, donations can be made in Irene's memory to the Prince George Hospice and Palliative Care Society.

Szeretlek Irén
