A snowmobiler is missing after an avalanche south of Pine Le Moray Provincial Park, 50 kilometres northeast of McLeod Lake.

On Sunday just after 4 p.m. Chetwynd RCMP were notified by the International Emergency Response Coordination Centre of an emergency beacon signal on the east face of the Murray Mountain range, between Mount Hunter and Milburn Peak.

It was later determined that an avalanche had occured while a group of snowmobilers were in the area and one man was missing, a North District RCMP statement said.

Chetwynd RCMP called in Search and Rescue for assistance, the statement said, however weather conditions and the risk of additional avalanches prevented crews from getting into the area to conduct a ground search.

Search and Rescue, the RCMP Air Service and police dogs trained in avalanche searches will start actively searching the area once conditions are safe, the statement said.

No other details were available as of press time.

North Distict RCMP encourages the public to check the Avalanche Canada website (www.avalanche.ca), share travel itineraries with family and friends and use extra caution when travelling in the back country.

The avalanche risk in the North Rockies area of the province, which includes Pine Le Moray Provincial Park, was ranked considerable in the alpine areas, moderate at the treeline and low below the treeline on Monday. The avalanche risk in all zones was ranked high in the North Rockies on Saturday and considerable in the alpine and treeline zones on Sunday.

Snowmobilers had reported an avalanche east of Pine Le Moray park on Saturday, however there were no injuries reported.
