A 32-year-old Prince George woman is facing a charge of assault after a confrontation at a store on Dominion Street downtown.

At about 2 p.m. on Wednesday, police officers responded to a reported assault in the 400-block of Dominion Street, an RCMP statement issued on Thursday said.

"A representative of the store confronted a female shoplifter who had concealed merchandise and was attempting to leave," the RCMP statement said. "The merchandise was recovered, however the staff member was assaulted before the suspect fled."

Members of the Prince George RCMP Downtown Safety Unit located a woman matching the suspect's description near Second Avenue and George Street.

Jessie Lynn Giroux was arrested without incident at the scene. GIroux was found in possession of a knife, contrary to her current probation order.

Giroux is charged with assault and failing to comply with her probation order. Giroux has a history of convictions for assault, including assault with a weapon, mischief and theft.

The RCMP wants to remind that confronting shoplifters can be dangerous. Store operators should get a description of the suspect and report the incident to police immediately.
