Prince George RCMP are asking for the public's help to solve a nine-year-old murder mystery.

It was on April 11, 2009 2009 that Vernon Darcy Baker, 44, showed up at 2300-block Victoria Street home seeking help for a stab wound to his chest. An ambulance and RCMP were called to the scene, but it was too late - he died short time later in hospital.

He had been seen walking by himself at around 4:45 a.m. in the vicinity of the First Litre Pub on Strathcona and showed up at the home at about 6:30 a.m. on what was a Saturday, police said at the time.

A few days later, a samurai sword with red discolouration on the tip and more splattered down the blade was pulled from the Hudson's Bay Slough canal but police could not confirm if it was related to Baker's death.

Baker was about 180 centimetres (5'11") tall and weighed 82 kilograms (180 pounds). He was last seen wearing black pants, white T-shirt with a white polo shirt over that, and a grey athletic jacket with no hood. The jacket had white piping on the sleeves. He also wore black socks with black and white runners.

"Vernon's family have not forgotten him and believe that someday they will have the answers they are looking for," said Cpl. Craig Douglass. "They believe that someone out there knows what happened to Vernon, and we believe that too."

Anyone who may have information that might help is asked to contact the Prince George RCMP at 250-561-3300 or anonymously contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or online at www.pgcrimestoppers.bc.ca.

You do not have to reveal your identity to Crime Stoppers. If you provide information that leads to an arrest, you could be eligible for a cash reward.
