Police believe alcohol played a role in an early-morning crash that disrupted traffic on Highway 16 East on Tuesday.

Just after 3 a.m., RCMP were called to the scene at the intersection of the highway and Boundary Road and found a full size pick-up with extensive damage after striking a light standard.

The driver and lone occupant, a 20-year-old man, was taken to hospital with serious injuries while an RCMP collision reconstructionist was called in to gather evidence.

"Alcohol is believed to be a factor," RCMP said. "The investigation is continuing and will be led by the Prince George RCMP's municipal traffic services section.

Traffic was disrupted near the scene for most of the morning but has since been cleared and with traffic returned to normal.
