Homeowner helps take down suspected thief

A 22-year-old man is in custody after he failed to evade a homeowner while allegedly trying to break into a shed. Jordy Martin Visser-Hayne has been charged with one count each of break and enter with intent to an commit offence.

A 22-year-old man is in custody after he failed to evade a homeowner while allegedly trying to break into a shed.

Jordy Martin Visser-Hayne has been charged with one count each of break and enter with intent to an commit offence.

Police were called to a Moyie Street home on Wednesday at about 8:15 a.m. where they found the homeowner holding down the suspect. An alert neighbour called police after hearing a scuffle, RCMP said.

A small quantity of drugs were also found on Visser-Hayne, according to police.

"Sheds, garages and compounds are being targeted by thieves," RCMP said. "Please take the extra steps to ensure your property is secured."

Visser-Hayne, who has several convictions for property-related offences committed in Quesnel, Kamloops and Prince George, was held in custody overnight and a hearing on whether to release him on bail is scheduled for today.
