Evacuees food vouchers have expiration date

There has been more than $1 million distributed in food vouchers to wildfire evacuees in Prince George.

As more than 9,000 evacuees have come to Prince George and registered for emergency social services at the College of New Caledonia, they are offered referrals for food on the basis of need, said a representative from B.C.'s Joint Information Centre.

The referrals for food come from public funds and therefore must be used immediately and in their entirety.

If the referral expires, the person can go back for a reassessment and could be deemed eligible for another referral.

The amount offered depends on circumstances. If a family is in a hotel or small trailer and can't store a lot of food, they will be given referrals in smaller increments suitable for shorter periods of time.

Local governments are being asked to distribute several food vouchers to be issued to meet a family's needs so they can have access to food when they need it.

It is also recommended that evacuees register with the Red Cross so they can be eligible for the emergency funding that is available to evacuees who meet the requirements.

Call the Canadian Red Cross at 1-800-863-6582 or register at redcross.ca, even if aid is not required.
