Young cowgirls have no fear

Advice from her dad helped Nukko Lake's Randi MacDonald overtake one "nasty" goat.

"My dad always told me to get mad," said MacDonald. "Because it gives you more power."

Applause broke out from the crowd at the 9th annual Little Britches rodeo when MacDonald managed to tie the tail of the goat Saturday during the junior girls event. Unfortunately, MacDonald received a no time due to the goat's resistance.

"That's not what counts," said MacDonald, adding it was more satisfying to beat the goat.

In addition to triumphing over the goat, the nine-year-old pushed through the pain of aggravating an old thumb injury to place first in dummy roping.

By finishing first, MacDonald received a shiny new silver buckle, which means a trip to the mall is in order.

"Now I just need a belt I can put it on," she smiled, glancing at her mom a couple feet away.

MacDonald's best friend, Lauren Bedford, also competed at the rodeo, placing sixth in dummy roping, fourth in goat tail tying and 10th in barrel racing.

In the junior boys events, Ryan-Spur Reid from Savona finished first in goat tying with a time of 15.90; Tyler Pederson of Gundy, Alta., had a time of 22.211 to win the stake race; and Brock Everett of 150 Mile House grabbed the prize for dummy roping.

Schanna Perry of Kamloops placed first in senior girls pole bending [22.169] and breakaway roping [14.75], while Heffley Creek's Coralee Mitchell won the barrel race in 16.819 and Keira Smith of Peachland finished the goat tying with the best time [15.93].

In the senior boys events, Owen Perry of Kamloops took the steer riding with 76 points; Dustin Reid of Savona won the stake race [27.240]; 150 Mile House's Blaine Manuel was the quickest at calf tying [19.825]; and Tristan Holt's 4.40 stood as the winning time in chute dogging.

Deyman Radcliffe of Lillooet was the best sport of the day after a timekeeping mix up forced him to redo his run. Radcliffe's official time placed him third.

The rodeo season wraps up for Little Britches next weekend in Clinton with the finals.
