Winning weekend for Cariboo Cats

Thanksgiving was a definitely a happy one for the Cariboo Cougars. The Cougars kept pace with the first-place Vancouver Northwest Giants with a two-game sweep of the North Island Silvertips in Nanaimo.

The Cougars kept pace with the first-place Vancouver Northwest Giants with a two-game sweep of the North Island Silvertips in Nanaimo.

Austin Gray scored twice on Sunday as the Cats skated to a 6-2 victory, while Darren Hards netted a pair of goals in the squad's 4-2 win Saturday.

The victories extend the Cougars' winning streak to three games as they improve to 6-1-1, good for 13 points in the B.C. Hockey Major Midget Leauge.

The Giants lead the league with an 8-0 record and 16 points.

After a scoreless first period Sunday, the Cougars scored three times in each of the second and third periods to keep their unbeaten road record intact.

In addition to the pair of goals from Gray, Colton Thomas had a big day offensively with a goal and two helpers. Todd Bredo and Alex Hanson each had a goal and an assist, while Connor MacEachern had two assists. Keith Redden also scored for the Cats.

On Saturday, Chase Dubois set up both of Hards' goals and notched one of his own. Gray also scored, while Justin Almeida added a pair of assists.

The Cats travel to Chase this weekend for a two-game set against the 0-6 Thompson Blazers Saturday and Sunday.
