The WIC bantam female Cougars got the start they wanted at their minor hockey provincial championship tournament.
Sunday in the Victoria suburb of Colwood, the Cougars beat the South Island Royals 5-3. Linemates Kyrsten Franz, Ava Keis and Megan Hickey combined for four goals and eight points. Madison Fjellstrom also scored for the Cats.
"They did a very good job of dumping the puck, controlling it deep, and then getting the puck into the high slot for conversions for goals," said Cougars coach Don Knoop.
Two of the Prince George goals were power-play markers.
In the nets, Avery Quiring picked up the victory.
Today, the 13- and 14-year-old Cougars will face the West Kootenay Wildcats of Castlegar.
The 10-team tournament runs through Wednesday.
Other Sunday results from provincial championship tournaments included: midget Tier 1, in Kelowna -- Prince George 6 Richmond 3; midget Tier 2, in Saanich -- Prince George 4 Penticton 2.
Today, the local peewee Tier 1 and bantam Tier 1 teams begin their provincial tournaments. In Langley, the peewees will take on the North Shore Winter Club and, in Kamloops, the bantams will play Kelowna this morning and Kamloops tonight.
