This weekend marks the first major championship of the year at Aberdeen Glen Golf Course.

About 100 athletes from Prince George, Smithers and Quesnel will tee off Friday in the three-day men's open championship.

"Last year we had 93 golfers," said Ian Wrynn, Aberdeen's director of golf. "Since it was changed to a three-day tournament, it's become more of a serious event."

In the mix is Adam Veenstra from Smithers, who will return to defend his title from a year ago.

In 2014, Veenstra shot rounds of 69, 71 and 79. Par at Aberdeen is 73.

Veenstra will tee off at 1:20 p.m. Friday.

Play gets underway at 9 a.m. Friday and 7 a.m. Saturday and Sunday.
