UNBC's men's basketball team earned its second victory of the season with a 83-74 win against the visiting UBC Okanagan Heat 83-74 Friday night at the Northern Sport Centre.
The Timberwolves improve to 2-5, while the Heat fall to 2-5 in the Canadian Interuniversity Sport Canada West Explorers Division.
The Timberwolves trailed 17-13 at the end of the first quarter, but then went on a 27-5 tear in the second quarter to take a 38-23 lead into the locker room at half-time.
With both teams scoring 21 points each in the third quarter, UNBC maintained its lead and hung on for the remainder of the game.
The Heat came within five points three minutes into the fourth quarter.
Franco Kouagnia scored a double-double with 20 points and 11 rebounds.
Fourth-year guard Billy Cheng led the way for UNBC with 14 points in the first half which included sinking four of six shots from the three-point arc. He finished the game with 16 points.
The Heat were led by third-year guard Mitch Goodwin with 18 points.
The two teams clash again tonight at 7 p.m. at the Northern Sport Centre. It's the final league game for both sides prior to the Christmas break.
