Alyx Treasure is closing in on the Olympic standard.
The 24-year-old high jumper from Prince George cleared 1.90 metres (six-foot-2 3/4) Saturday while winning the Rock Chalk Classic track and field meet in Lawrence, Kan. That broke her previous best of 1.89 m, set in 2014 at the Canadian championships in Moncton, N.B.
Treasure, a student at Kansas State University, is no longer eligible to compete for NCAA titles. But as the Prince George Track and Field Club member proved Saturday, she appears ready to tackle elite international competition in her attempts to qualify for the Olympics in August in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
The Olympic standard is 1.93 m, a mere 1 1/4 inches higher than what she cleared at the meet Saturday. The qualification period for the 2016 Olympics ends on July 11.
