Track and field stars testing talents at nationals

After building up their track and field talents and testing themselves at the district, regional and provincial levels, six Prince George athletes are about to see how they stack up against their national peers from across Canada.

After building up their track and field talents and testing themselves at the district, regional and provincial levels, six Prince George athletes are about to see how they stack up against their national peers from across Canada.

Competition at the Legion Youth National championships in Langley starts today and the Prince George Track and Field Club has three athletes involved, while Athletics North of Prince George has also sent three athletes to the event.

Ryan Gaiesky of Athletics North will be in the starting blocks for the youth 110-metre hurdles preliminary event today at 10:05 a.m., with finals to follow at 1:50 p.m. Gaiesky's seed time is 15.76 seconds.

Gaiesky is also entered in the 300m hurdles event on Sunday, with the preliminary race at 11 a.m., and finals at 2:15 p.m. His qualifying time is 41.76.

On Saturday, Lindsay King of the PGTFC gets her chance to shine in the midget age class 200m hurdles. Seeded at 30.33 seconds, King's preliminary races start at 9:15 a.m. and the final is set for 12:45 p.m. Shelby Jansen of Athletics North runs her 300m preliminary race today starting at 9:45 a.m. If she makes finals she'll race again at 2:50 p.m. Her seed time is 41.95. On Sunday, Jansen is entered in the 200m event, with preliminaries at 10:05 and finals at 1:45. Her seed time at that distance is 26:13.

PGTFC member Alexander Nemethy of Vanderhoof will race the youth 3,000m event on Saturday and goes into the 10:50 a.m. finals-only race with a seed time of 8:58.36. Then on Sunday at 2:25 p.m., Nemethy will tackle the 2,00m steeplechase. His qualifying time entering that race is 6:14.75. Cole Dinsdale of the PGTFC is also entered in the 2,000m youth steeplechase. His seed time is 6:42.77.

Emma Floris of Athletics North competes in the youth 200m race Sunday with preliminaries at 9:45 and finals at 1:45.
