The name has changed, but the spirit of the event remains the same. And for those who want to participate in the 55+ B.C. Games, registration is now open.

Traditionally known as the B.C. Seniors Games, the 55+ gathering will happen Sept. 20-24 in Coquitlam. Zone coordinator Dick Voneugen - who has attended the Games a remarkable 25 times - says they have something for everyone and is encouraging people to get involved.

Unlike other provincial-level competitions, there is no qualification process.

"That's the beauty of it," Voneugen said. "It's basically, participate in an event - although there are some fantastic athletes there.

"We've had people going for the first time, not knowing what to expect, coming back and saying, 'Hey, once-a-week training doesn't do it. I have to spend more time if I want to be in the medals.' But it's open to everybody."

Anyone 55 years of age or older who is interested in taking part in the Games can contact Voneugen by phone (250-962-7672) or via email ([email protected]). The registration period closes on June 1.

Events at the 55+ B.C. Games are: archery; badminton; bridge (duplicate and social); carpet bowling; cribbage; cycling; darts; dragon boat racing; five-pin bowling; floor curling; golf; ice curling; ice hockey; lawn bowling; pickleball; slo-pitch; soccer; swimming; table tennis; tennis; track and field; and whist.

Voneugen, who will turn 84 in July, plans to be in Coquitlam for this edition of the Games. His intention is to volunteer his services at the track and field competition.

The first B.C. Seniors Games took place in Vernon in 1988.

Prince George was the host city in 2002 and 2008.
