A slow start saw the UNBC Timberwolves men's basketball team dig a hole they weren't able to get out of as they fell Saturday to Thompson Rivers University Wolfpack 78-63.
The loss leaves the T-wolves with a 1-1 record after their first weekend of Canada West action. UNBC earned its first win on the hard court Friday in Kamloops when they edged TRU 69-67.
In the rematch the Wolfpack jumped out to a 26-12 advantage after the first quarter and never looked back. The closest the T-wolves were able to get was nine points.
Blaz Bozinovic led the Wolfpack with 10 points, 13 rebounds while Will Ondrik had 17 points and four rebounds. All eight players for TRU had at least one rebound. TRU had a combined 49 rebounds to UNBC's 32.
The T-wolves were led by Francis Rowe's 17 points and Joel Rybachuk's 14 points, five rebounds. Sam Raphael contributed 10 points.
UNBC returned home where they'll host the first Canada West games at the Northern Sport Centre, Friday and Saturday, 8 p.m., against the Trinity Western Spartans (1-1).
T-wolves women bounced again
The UNBC women are still searching for their first Canada West victory on the hard court after dropping their second game to the TRU Wolfpack by a 83-62 margin.
With the loss the T-wolves fell to 0-2 while the Wolfpack improved to 2-0.
Diane Schuetze had 18 points, 18 rebounds for the Wolfpack in the second game. In Friday's 78-61 win Schuetze had 28 points and 17 rebounds.
UNBC was led by Mercedes Van Koughnett as the fifth year player had 23 points and 11 rebounds while Emily Kaehn notched 15 points and eight rebounds.
The T-wolves host the Trinity Western Spartans (2-0) in their Canada West home debut at the Northern Sport Centre, Friday and Saturday, 6 p.m.
