Team Pacific wins battle of western teams

At the 2012 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge it was Team Pacific scoring a dominating 5-2 victory over Team West on Thursday on the opening day of the tournament in Windsor, Ont.

Alex Forsberg, the Prince George Cougars leading scorer with 26 points, had an assist for Team West in the loss, while Jordan Tkatch put his name on the score sheet when he and Pacific's Tyson Ballie were each accessed two-minute minors for roughing.

Team Pacific had two goals from Kootenay Ice forward Sam Reinhart and out shot Team West 39-14. It was part of a three-goal second period for Pacific. Other Cougars in the game included Team West forward Jarrett Fontaine and Team Pacific forward Chase Witala.

The teams were tied at 1-1 after 20 minutes, while the only scoring in the final period came when Curtis Lazer potted an empty-net goal in the final minute.

Quebec, Ontario and Team USA also opened the tournament with wins. Team Pacific plays their second game today against the Czech Republic. Team West has the day off.

Team Pacific won the bronze medal at last year's challenge, while Ontario beat the USA for gold.
