The Thompson Rivers University WolfPack ran out to 47-point first-half lead and never looked back as they went on to defeat the visiting UNBC Timberwolves women's basketball squad 85-55 Friday night.
The game in Kamloops was the first of the 2014-15 season in the Canadian Interuniversity Sport Canada West Explorers Division for both squads.
The WolfPack are now 1-0, while the Timberwolves are 0-1.
The T-wolves got off to a slow start in the first half as they trailed 47-17, due in large part to shooting only 25 per cent (six-of-24) from the floor.
But they rebounded in the second half with 20 points in the third quarter and 18 points in the final quarter but couldn't overcome the first-half deficit.
Fourth-year forward Sarah Robin led the way for UNBC with 14 points, including 10 in the second half.
Second-year guard Cassie Rerick followed with 11 points, while first-year forward Vailiki Louka had seven points and four rebounds.
The veteran WolfPack squad was led by Kassie Colona who netted 21 points. TRU had five players who scored in the double digits.
On the men's side, the TRU WolfPack rallied from a 42-35 first-half deficit to edge the UNBC Timberwolves 80-84 in their season-opener.
TRU outscored UNBC 27-15 in the third quarter and staved off the T-wolves attack in the fourth quarter.
Fifth-year forward Franco Kouagnia led UNBC with a double-double - 23 points and 10 rebounds, and was good on nine of 11 shots from the free-throw line.
Fourth-year forward Michael Smith and third-year forward Rhys Elliott each had 13 points.
The WolfPack improve to 1-0, while the Timberwolves fall to 0-1 in the Explorers Division.
Both the T-wolves and WolfPack return to the floor tonight in Kamloops. The women tip off at 5 p.m. while the men follow at 8 p.m.
