It was a successful opening night for the UNBC Timberwolves' men and women on the Northern Sports Centre hard court. After the women crushed the Columbia Bible College Bearcats 119-47, the men followed with a 94-42 victory over the Bearcat men.
Jose Araujo led the men with 23 points in the win, while Keven Madsen had 12 rebounds. The women T-wolves were led by Jennifer Clyne with 20 points. The Bearcats' Sharece Thoutenhoofd had 22 of her team's 47 points.
In Western Hockey League action Friday, the Prince George Cougars skated to a 4-1 win in Everett over the Silvertips.
Spencer Asuchak had two goals, while defenceman Martin Marincin had a goal and assist for the Cougars. Drew Owsley made 18 saves for his for his fifth win of the season.
The win gives the Cougars (6-12-0-1) a two-point lead over the last-place Silvertips (4-14-0-3) in the Western Conference. The two teams tangled again Saturday in Everett at 7:05 p.m.
In the BCHL, the Prince George Spruce Kings were 7-4 losers to the Merritt Centennials.
The Kings fell behind 5-1 after 40 minutes and were unable to complete the comeback in the third period.
Evan Stack led the Centennials with a goal and three helpers, while newcomer Stefan Bazer had a goal and two assists for the Spruce Kings, playing on a line with Paul De Jersey and Michael Colantone.
The Kings retuned home after the game for a 3 p.m. contest with the Victoria Grizzlies on Saturday at The Coliseum.
