Strong national finish for local curlers

Team B.C., featuring Prince George residents Garnet Boese and Dave Johnston, fell just short of a playoff spot at the Canadian senior men's curling championship in Abbotsford. With a 7-4 record, B.C. finished round-robin competition in fourth place.

Team B.C., featuring Prince George residents Garnet Boese and Dave Johnston, fell just short of a playoff spot at the Canadian senior men's curling championship in Abbotsford.

With a 7-4 record, B.C. finished round-robin competition in fourth place. The top three teams -- Alberta (10-1), Newfoundland/Labrador (8-3) and Ontario (8-3) -- made playoffs, with Alberta getting a bye to Sunday's final.

In the championship game, Alberta -- skipped by Rob Armitage -- beat Glenn Goss's Newfoundland/Labrador rink 5-2.

In the semifinal, Newfoundland/Labrador defeated Ontario's Brian Lewis 10-4.

Team B.C. included skip Dennis Graber and third Brian Windsor, both of Kamloops. Boese was the team's second and Johnston threw lead stones.

Abbotsford also hosted the senior women's championship. In that final, Alberta's Cathy King topped Newfoundland/Labrador's Cathy Cunningham 9-5.
