Keanan St. Rose knew before the Western Canadian short track speed skating championships began he was the fastest of the fast among his provincial peers in the 13-year-old age group.

He proved that a month ago in Penticton when he blazed a trail to three gold, one silver and two bronze medals at the B.C. Winter Games.

The stakes were higher last weekend in Edmonton when the 13-year-old Prince George Blizzard Speed Skating Club member took on the best from B.C., Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba but St. Rose took it in stride, clinching the Train to Train 13-year-old boys overall title as Western Canadian champion.

In the 1,500-metre event, St. Rose qualified for the final by winning his heat race. He then captured the A-final by 11-100ths of a second over second-place Matej Pederson of Calgary, winning in a time of 2:30.321.

St. Rose also won the 400m final in 38:01, winning by half a second over Lukas MacDonald of Vancouver and tracked down gold in the 2,000m points race and the 200m pursuit.

Two other Blizzard skaters -- Robyn Barwise and Sylvia Masich -- competed in the Train to Train 14-year-old girls class.

Barwise finished fifth in the 3,000m points race, won the 1,500m B-final, was fourth in the 400m B-final and ended up second in the 200m pursuit D-final.

Masich placed third in the 1,500m B-final, second in the 200m pursuit C-final, second in the 400m D-final and was second in the 3,000m points race B-final.
