Friday the Spruce Kings (11-6-1-3) dropped an 8-7 double-overtime decision in Trail to the Smoke Eaters (10-13-0-1), which saw the B.C. Hockey League clubs combine for eight goals in the opening period and another six in the third frame. Kirk Thompson went the distance in the visitors' net facing 51 shots from the Smokies while Adam Todd earned the win after reliving Lyndon Stanwood in the Trail net to start the second period.

Valik Chichkin potted the winner midway through the three-on-three overtime period to send the Spruce Kings to their fourth straight loss. The Kings did earn a point to move within two of the second place Surrey Eagles (13-7-0-2) in the Mainland division.

Prince George led 1-0 early but the teams combined for seven goals in the final 5:28 of the first period which saw the Spruce Kings take a 5-3 advantage into the intermission.

Tyson Witala and Shayne Morrissey each had three point nights for Prince George while Smoke Eaters' captain Garrett McMullen had a pair of goals in the opening period.

Brent Baltus had four points (one goal, three helpers) for Trail.

The Spruce Kings wrap up their weekend road trip through the Interior division Sunday afternoon when they meet the Salmon Arm Silverbacks (6-11-1-3) for the first time this season.
