Spruce Kings extend contracts of GM Mike Hawes, head coach Alex Evin

Hawes heading into his 13th season as general manager

The Prince George Spruce Kings have extended the contracts of general manager Mike Hawes and head coach Alex Evin.

Hawes, 53, signed a three-year extension after wrapping up his 18th season with the B.C. Hockey League team he first joined as an assistant coach. Next season will be his 13th as GM.

“I’m happy to sign Mike to a new three-year contract,” said Spruce Kings president David Keough. “Mike has been the face of the Spruce Kings for many years.

“Mike strives to make others around him better, from our players, coaching staff, and to our front office. He has a great reputation within the BCHL and across junior hockey, which has helped our organization become one of the best in Junior A hockey.”

Hawes was named BCHL executive of the year in 2019, after he built the team that won its first Fred Page Cup BCHL/Doyle Cup regional championships that year. The Spruce Kings were also league finalists in 2018.

"I have been with the Spruce Kings now for almost 20 years,” said Hawes. “As a person who grew up in Prince George, I take a lot of pride in how the Spruce Kings represent our community. It has taken a lot of work by a lot of people and I am very proud of how far the organization has come and how well-respected we are throughout the BCHL and throughout the hockey world.

Evin, a 36-year-old native of Castlegar, signed a two-year extension. He served two seasons as an associate coach and took over behind the bench in 2019-20 when Adam Maglio left for the WHL. In four seasons as head coach, Evin has compiled an 86-72-13-15-0 record.

“I am thankful for the opportunity to continue working for a great BCHL organization," said Evin. "I enjoy working alongside Mike Hawes and the rest of the team and look forward to continuing to build on the solid foundation we have here in Prince George.”
