Spruce Kings bombed in Penticton

They're tied with the Langley Chiefs for most games played (30), and with just six wins are on a equal plane with the Quesnel Millionaires. As for the other three -- fewest points (14), most losses (22) and most goals against (138), the Spruce Kings are all alone at the bottom of the BCHL.

Sunday's 10-1 loss to the Penticton Vees in Penticton marked the halfway point in the Kings' 2010-11 schedule.

Mark MacMillan, with three goals and two assists, had a five-point game for the Vees (18-8-0-1), who moved into second place in the Interior Conference, two points behind Trail. Brendan O'Donnell picked up three goals and one assist, while Joey Holka, Garrett Milan, Joey Laleggia and Curtis Loik also scored for Penticton.

Kings starting goalie Alex Wright was replaced by Kirk Thompson at 13:56 of the second period, after O'Donnell made it an 8-0 game.

Nic DeSousa ruined Joel Rumpel's shutout bid, opening the scoring 19 seconds into the final period. The Kings (6-22-0-2) were outshot 46-21.

Saturday night in Trail, the Smoke Eaters doubled the Kings 4-2. Cullen Bradshaw led the way for Trail with two goals, one that came shorthanded in the second period. Beau Blanaru and Sam Mellor had the other Smoke Eater goals. DeSousa and Jujar Khaira were the Kings goalscorers.

Thompson took the loss in the Prince George nets, making 28 saves as his team was outshot 32-28.

The weekend began Friday in Westside, where the Spruce Kings lost 5-4.

They'll be back on the road for games Thursday at Westside and Friday in Merritt, then return to the Coliseum for a Saturday game against the Salmon Arm Silverbacks.
