MacDonald bounces to bronze

Anna MacDonald just wanted to finish in the top 10.

She did much better than that.

MacDonald, a 16-year-old member of the Prince George Gymnastics Club, was in Edmonton this past weekend for the national championships in double-mini trampoline. She competed at Level 5 in the 17-and-over division and finished in fourth place.

MacDonald was making her first appearance at nationals. She qualified for the meet in January in Coquitlam.

In a double-mini trampoline competition, the athlete makes an approach on a runway and mounts the slightly-angled front part of the apparatus with a feet-first jump. That creates an initial bounce, and then a second bounce on the flat portion of the trampoline is used to perform a skill. A third bounce sets the competitor up for the dismount. Each participant performs in front of a panel of judges.

At the Okanagan High School Open Beach Volleyball Championships, held in Kelowna last weekend, Matthew Shand and Nolan Minck teamed up to win bronze medals in the junior boys division. In the senior boys category, Ben Shand and Graham Walkey also battled to bronze.

Bandits gun down Stylers

The Claude's Barbershop/BX Pub Bandits had their firepower on full display against the Cowboy Ranch Stylers on Monday night.

In the Prince George Senior Lacrosse Association contest, held at Kin 1, the Bandits rode off with a 19-4 victory. The Stylers couldn't slow down the likes of Cole Paciejewski, Drew Doig and Brett Doig. Paciejewski finished the game with five goals and six assists, while Drew Doig had two goals and nine assists and Brett Doig chipped in with three goals and six assists. Alex Nimmo, with five goals and two helpers, also had a big night for the winners. Brandon Gordon of the Bandits fired three goals and added one assist, and Dan Martin also scored.

The Bandits were in control from start to finish, as they led 9-2 after the first period.

Douglas Porter scored twice for the Stylers, while Matt Rochon and Chris Jandric had singles.

Tonight (8 p.m., Kin 1), the Westwood Pub Devils will take on the Northland Nissan Assault.
