Sport BC awards coming to P.G.

The unsung heroes of sport are not the front-line players who net the winning goal in overtime. You won't find them running the bases after a walk-off home run, nor will they save the day with a timely dive in the soccer crease.

The unsung heroes of sport are not the front-line players who net the winning goal in overtime.

You won't find them running the bases after a walk-off home run, nor will they save the day with a timely dive in the soccer crease.

But they might be the coach who taught those skills, the unpaid referee who is always there to lay down the law, or the office administrator whose hours of volunteer time behind the scenes make a sports league or tournament more than just a labour of love.

For showing that kind of dedication, Sport B.C. would like to reward you.

Presented by Encana at a site to be determined, the Sport B.C. Community Sport Hero Awards will be coming to Prince George on Feb. 8, and now's your chance to nominate a deserving candidate.

To be considered, award candidates must be an individual from the local community who makes a voluntary contribution to amateur sports through coaching, officiating, administrative boards or special events committees. That person's involvement in sports volunteering must date back a minimum of eight years.

"Volunteers are what fuel the development and sustainability of community sport within British Columbia," said Sport BC president and chief executive officer Tim Gayda.

"These awards are a rare and meaningful opportunity to acknowledge individuals who have made a significant and continued contribution to sport within their community."

Nominations will be accepted until Jan. 14 through the website, www.sportbc.com.
