Summer break is just about over and for the Prince George Cougars class is in session starting on Wednesday.
The Cougars begin their 32nd season in the Western Hockey League with their training camp that runs from Wednesday to Sunday.
After on-ice testing on Thursday, training camp scrimmages begin on Friday at 9 a.m. at CN Centre.
The 82 players invited to camp will be grouped into five teams named after Cougars who have gone on to pro hockey careers.
The camp teams are Team (Chris) Mason, Team (Jansen) Harkins, Team (Dustin) Byfuglien, Team (Brett) Connelly and Team (Zdeno) Chara.
All on-ice sessions are open to the public, including the daily scrimmages Friday-Sunday, the Prospects Showcase on Thursday, Aug. 28 at 6 p.m., and the Rob Charney Cup intrasquad game on Sunday at 6 p.m.
The Cougars will pair down the roster to prepare for WHL exhibition games the following weekend. They’ll meet the Edmonton Oil Kings in Hinton, Alta., for games on Friday, Sept. 5 (7 p.m. MT) and Sunday, Sept. 7 (noon MT).
On Sept. 12 the Cougars will be in Kamloops for a preseason game (7 p.m.) against the Blazers and the same teams will meet again on Saturday (5 p.m.) in Quesnel.
The regular season starts Friday, Sept. 20 against the Portland Winter Hawks, the first of a CN Centre doubleheader that concludes on Sept. 13.
