Smith sets new fast time in Family Y Road Race

Mike Smith didn't need a map or compass to navigate his way to victory. All he required during Sunday's Family YMCA Road Race 10-kilometre event was fresh legs.

Thanks to a scaled-down training schedule prior to race day, he had them.

The 33-year-old Smith, who also competes in the sport of orienteering, posted a winning time of 36 minutes 32 seconds. He was almost a full minute ahead of second-place finisher Brian Nemethy (37:29), who celebrated his 49th birthday the same day.

Smith's clocking was about 30 seconds quicker than his previous personal-best on the course, which started and finished at Masich Place Stadium.

"Any time you do that, it's good," said Smith, an emergency room doctor at the University Hospital of Northern B.C.
