The Rated PG RollerGirls will toss some fresh meat at the Gold Pain Derby Girls Saturday at the Roll-A-Dome.
The RollerGirls, the city's roller derby team, will be making their season debut against their aptly-named rivals from Quesnel. In the match (7 p.m. start), five brand-new players will be on their wheels, trying to create some mayhem on the way to a Rated PG victory.
"We had 17 girls go through our fresh meat [training program] and five girls passed," said veteran RollerGirls pivot Alicia Lockdown. "The rest that did not pass will join the next fresh meat group, starting on Feb. 4. Interest has been tremendous. We went with a new fresh meat program so it's $100 and they get an 11-week program, one day a week for two hours. This way they can concentrate on learning the game instead of just being thrown in with us. That's what was happening before and we were having a decline because you put these new girls out with us and they're like, 'Oh my God, I can't do this.'"
The Gold Pain girls will also have some rookies in uniform so Lockdown is anticipating an entertaining game.
As well as new players, the RollerGirls have Loki, a new coach for 2013.
"She has resigned as a skater and has taken on the reins as our new coach," Lockdown said. "She decided that she could push us better from the sidelines. We needed somebody to step up and really push us for us to advance because we're looking to go to Westerns in the summertime."
The RollerGirls are now in their sixth season of operation.

Ticket prices range from $5 to $10. Kids aged six-and-under can watch free of charge.
Doors open at 6:30 p.m.
